Philip Badal (b.1953), started his creative career as a celebrated design student in Tehran, Iran. Philip moved to Brooklyn in 1979 to continue his studies in Communication Design at Pratt Institute’s MFA program, subsequently becoming a sought-after art director at several advertising and design agencies. After almost two decades in New York City, Philip and his family relocated to Southern California in 1997. A transition that began to broaden his skills, awakened his long-standing interest in furniture design, and led to the formation of a studio practice intersecting his passion for clean lines as well as craftsmanship, elevated by Pacific light. Philip lives in Del Mar and design-builds everything by hand, locally in San Diego.
Philip Badal is an artist, artisan, and sculptor. His recent experiments with natural material and light, present a sophisticated tension between Mother Nature and human nature’s need to control her. Inspired by the raw beauty of wood, specifically the dark solid strength of walnut, Philip’s sculptural lamp series symbolically brings out the light he imagines WITHIN.
