James Paterson Fine Art, Booth 309
Meet James Paterson, whose approach to his art is one of a simple sense of wonder, his aim being to create art that is redemptive, revealing the reality of God in the world in such a manner as to give expression to mystery. Paterson uses materials in a simple way, often incorporating moving parts that viewers can play with. “These Prayer Machines are not my actual prayers,” he says. “Rather, they serve as metaphors attempting to capture those elusive moments when I inhabit the thin places between the temporal seen and the eternal unseen.”

4 p.m. MEET THE ARTIST/LIVE DEMONSTRATION: MICHAEL CARINI
Carini Arts, Booth 104
The self-proclaimed “acrylic alchemist,” Michael Carini lives and works in San Diego, where he creates paintings that play with viewers’ senses and illuminate the human condition through gorgeously colorful abstract compositions. “Don’t be afraid to be different,” Carini says. “Be afraid to be the same.” Each painting is a journey through his darkest dreams and highest hopes. Watch as he creates, and lose yourself in the labyrinth of experiences he deploys with paint and canvas.

Selected as one of the Art San Diego 2017 Spotlight Artists, Kate Taylor’s work explores the unique forms and colors of nature and how they are an integral part of our lives, bringing contentment, grounding, and joy. 6 p.m. MEET THE ARTIST: LORI RYERSON
Focalocity, Booth F519
Spending 16 years on the flying trapeze and traveling the world has had a profound influence on how Lori Ryerson sees the world. Finding the narrative in abandoned urban landscapes, conveying the wonder of our universe, capturing what silence looks like—these are the stories she tells through her lens and interprets into her art.
